Report on my visit to Cuba 2012 - from Lars Müller

Singing lessons in the church of Daniel Gonzalez

Church service on the Isle of Youth in the church of Carell Lescaille

I´ve been in March 2012 for three and a half weeks in Cuba, visiting the EBM projects and the church of Daniel Gonzalez in Havana. It has been an amazing opportunity to get to know the extraordinary work they are doing over there and it changed for somehow my life.
I´ve stayed most of the time in the church of Daniel Gonzalez and this way I could see and work with a lot of projects they are making there. Every day in the week they have 2-3 groups of children and youths doing sports, like basketball, soccer or volleyball. So they reach every day about 50 different children and youths with a short 15 minute devotion and one time a month they invite the parents too, to teach them some basics about christian education, about the church and to pray for them! So many entire families just got to know Christ this way, it´s impressive!!! Additional to this program they offer classes of musical education, like guitar, drums, flute, choir, … , but the children cannot afford to buy their own instruments, so the church (with the help of EBM) lends them instruments, so they can practice at home and have to care for the instruments. This way as well they reach about 20 children a day and later their parents too. Also I´ve been visiting a lot of house churches, they have a really huge net of house churches all over their district and every house church tries to reach their neighborhood with the gospel, so this way they reach so many people in a personal way and just have baptized a lot of them.
I also stayed in the house of Frank San Juan in the slums of Havana. Together we visited house churches and I got to know all kind of people he is working with like alcoholics and drug addicts. I saw the way they have been reached with the gospel and it changed their lifes in a radical way! Now they are going out to preach the gospel like it happened with Frank. I´ve also had the opportunity to preach on Sunday in their church and it´s great to see this growing church in the slums of Havana. It´s so difficult in Cuba to get the permission and the material to build a church or even a gathering room, but it has been possible by the grace of God and the donations of EBM that they can have a small platform with a roof on top of some houses in Havana and they are so gratefully for it.
Later I went with Carlos Waldow and Arturo Köbernick to the Island of Youth and I´ve had the possibility to see a lot of the new church planting projects. It´s impressive to see how they gather together in the backyard of small houses and the way they are growing and starting new projects. Now they are in need of a lot of new chairs, because when there is founded a new house church the “mother-church”  gives them like a gift a number of chairs, but now the mother-church is in need of chairs because there are so many new house churches founded!! And there is no way to get those chairs on the Island of Youth.
There is a lot more I could tell. But on the whole I´ve been so impressed by the Cubans, how they are working with so much motivation, love and dedication, trying with all their heart to reach more and more people for Christ, to see so many new house churches and growing projects and to see how thirsty the Cuban people are for the gospel in the present time, it´s really a great opportunity and I really think it is God´s time for Cuba.
